Meeting Point
What: Open competition for a new Meeting Point
Where: Bruun´s Gallery in Aarhus DK
When: Autumn 2007
The SuperKo-family is shortlisted for 3 out of 10 finalist-proposals in the open competition for a new meeting point in Brunn´s Gallery, Aarhus.
Our proposals were made during a short one-day summer workshop in August, and is in many ways very representative for our approach to design and the development of ideas.
All three proposals focuses on how to create a “special place” inside the cacophonous visual noise of a shopping center. Because of that environment it is necessary for whatever object to create its own context and understanding - by simply putting in an abstract element or sculpture, you risk being mistaken for advertisement or just decor.
Our three proposals - On the Clock, Under the Arrow, and Meeting point - therefore all tries to be something more than just decor.
The On the Clock-proposal is an allegory on the phrase: “Lets meet under the clock”, which is often used when you are meeting someone in a railway-station.
In our proposal the situation is twisted and you do not meet under the clock, but on the clock…
The Under the Arrow-proposal is focusing on how to create a place inside of “nowhere”. By simply pointing on a otherwise empty spot, this spot becomes more significant than any other empty spots, and thereby creating a point of interest… or a special place!
The Meeting Point-proposal is a somewhat different approach than the other two proposals and is more trying to compete with the noisy interior of the shopping center. It does so by literally establishing a totem pole of the letters in the word Meeting Point (in danish the word is Mødestedet). At first it baffles the spectator and makes them wonder… for only later on to discover the true intent of the pole, inscribed in the random order of the letters.
